What is the difference between original car paint and repair paint?

What is original paint?

Everyone’s understanding of the original factory paint should be the paint used during the manufacturing of the entire vehicle. The author’s personal habit is to understand the paint used in the painting workshop during spraying. In fact, body painting is a very complex process, and different coatings are used at different stages during the body painting process, forming different paint layers.

Paint layer structure diagram

This is a traditional paint layer structure. It can be seen that on the vehicle body steel plate, there are four paint layers: electrophoretic layer, intermediate layer, color paint layer, and clear paint layer. These four paint layers together form the visible car paint layer obtained by the authors, which is commonly referred to as the original factory paint. Later, the car paint repaired after scratching is only equivalent to the color paint layer and clear paint layer, which is commonly referred to as repair paint.

What is the function of each paint layer?

Electrophoretic layer: Directly attached to the white body, providing anti-corrosion protection for the body and providing a good adhesion environment for the intermediate coating

Intermediate coating: attached to the electrophoretic layer, enhances the anti-corrosion protection of the vehicle body, provides a good adhesion environment for the paint layer, and plays a certain role in setting off the color phase of the paint.

Color paint layer: Attached to the mid coat, further enhancing the anti-corrosion protection of the vehicle body and displaying the color scheme, the various colors seen by the authors are displayed by the color paint layer.

Clear paint layer: commonly known as varnish, attached to the paint layer, further strengthens the anti-corrosion protection of the vehicle body and protects the paint layer from small scratches, making the color more transparent and slowing down fading. This paint layer is a relatively special and effective protective layer.

People who repair car paint know that after spraying the paint, the paint layer needs to be baked to accelerate the drying of the paint layer and strengthen the adhesion between the paint layers.

What is the difference between repair paint and original paint?

The original paint can only be used with a baking temperature of 190 ℃, so the author believes that if this temperature cannot be reached, it is not the original paint. The original paint claimed by the 4S store is misleading. The so-called original paint is high-temperature paint, while the paint on the bumper does not belong to the original high-temperature paint when it is in the factory, but belongs to the category of repair paint. After leaving the factory, all repair paint used is called repair paint, It can only be said that there are advantages and disadvantages in the field of repair paint. Currently, the best repair paint is German Parrot paint, which is recognized as the world’s top automotive repair paint. It is also the designated paint for many major brand manufacturers such as Bentley, Rolls Royce, Mercedes Benz, etc. There are many benefits of original paint, including color hue, film thickness, color difference, brightness, corrosion resistance, and color fading uniformity. However, the most important thing is that its anti rust epoxy is the best. But the paint surface may not necessarily be the best, for example, Japanese cars are recognized for their very thin paint surface, which cannot match the hardness and flexibility of German parrot paint. This is also why in recent years, many car enthusiasts have consulted the navigator for color changes shortly after buying a new car.
